The ballad is a form of verse set to music telling a story. Poets and composers used the ballad as a way to develop a long, narrative love story. Ballads were sung throughout Europe and the Americas. They gradually became a slow form of popular love song and the term is now often synonymous with any love song, particularly the pop or rock power ballad. The term ballad can be used to describe any slow sentimental tune or love song. The traditional ballad probably originated with wandering minstrels in fifteenth century Europe. The minstrels would tell stories in song accompanied by string instruments such as a lutes and viols. One of the famous medieval ballads was the story of Robin Hood. Black River Ballad tells whatever story you may like to think of while playing it. There are quite a few "Black Rivers" in the United States, including one that I have visited in Arizona.
